What Are The Requirements For An Online Higher Education?
When pursuing higher education online, it can be hard to determine what you need to meet the enrollment requirements. While most University and MOOC’s websites provide a good overview of basic requirements, not everyone has a University selected. Below we highlight what you’ll need to prepare to apply for a degree in higher education online.
Bachelor’s Degree
One of the most important requirements needed to apply for online higher education is a completed bachelor’s degree. Each program accepts different types of bachelor’s degrees to be considered for a master’s degree. There is no bachelor’s degree that is one size fits all. Below is an example of the required bachelor’s degrees needed to obtain certain master’s degrees.
Master’s Degree Type |
Bachelor’s Degrees Accepted |
Accounting | Accounting preferred, but other bachelor’s degrees accepted |
Nursing | Undergraduate degree in Nursing |
Education | Undergraduate degree and completion of additional prerequisite coursework |
Each degree is unique. Students can use a bachelor’s degree in most subjects and complete prerequisite coursework to qualify for a master’s degree in a different subject. In other instances, the bachelor’s degree required is specific. It’s always best to research the requirements before applying to a program for the best results.
Minimum GPA
Every University and educational institution has a minimum GPA requirement in order to admit students into a master’s program. In most instances, a student’s GPA must be a minimum of 3.0 to qualify.
Entrance Exams
Many institutes of higher education also require students to partake in entrance exams such as the GRE. These entrance exams test a student’s knowledge of a specific subject matter. This information is used to determine if the potential student is a good fit for the program they applied for.
Official Transcripts
Official transcripts from previous educational facilities are also required. These transcripts are used as proof of GPA and compared to the university’s curriculum. If the GPA is acceptable and the program path matches the expectations of the University, many students are moved on to the next steps in the application process.
FASFA
When applying for a master’s degree, students must also complete their FASFA. The FASFA will determine the amount of Federal financial aid a student is eligible for. This also gives the institution a broad idea of what to expect when providing a package and offer to an accepted student.
Language Proficiency
International students applying for a higher education degree must prove their English proficiency. This is accomplished by taking one of the following tests to qualify:
- TOEFL
- IELTS
- EF ST
Most Universities will inform students which test they accept to prove English language proficiency before submitting an application.
Interview
All master’s degree students will often undergo an interview process before obtaining acceptance to a program. This allows the facility to determine whether or not a student is a good fit for the type of program the school offers.
Requirements Met, Now Apply
Once you determine that you have met the appropriate requirements for a specific master’s degree program, it is time to apply. Most Universities accept online applications. Once you apply, it’s time to wait to see the result. Most results occur within four weeks; other institutions take longer. Either way, research other options while you wait. There are many amazing programs available.
